Learn how to paint portraits using the underpainting oil technique – Part 1

Lesson #011 Part 1: By using the underpainting oil technique we will achieve the effect that the old masters gained in their paintings.

Using the technique of the old masters can benefit you. Why you should learn this? Because this is the first step to be a pro. To gain the effect you want to achieve in oil painting, you need a basic understanding of the underpainting drawing.

Underpainting oil portrait technique is the first video in a series of three that explains how to prepare grisaille mix for an underpainting portrait.

In the second tutorial, we learned how to paint the grayscale layer of the portrait.

So, what is the Grisaille technique?

Grisaille technique is an oil painting technique an artist uses, to create a monochromatic drawing in greys or similar neutral grey colors. This considers as the first layer of the oil painting, and this is what called the underpainting oil technique.

The first layer was the underpainting oil technique drawing of the woman’s face on the canvas. The second layer was adding the brownish values, while in the third layer is the mix of the gray values, the darkest to the lightest parts of the painting that we learned in the first video on this series. Using grayscale underpainting enables us to darken the shadow parts and lighten the lightened parts of the image. In this stage of the painting, we are building the contrast by using values shade of color for the shadows and the highlights, the dark parts of an image, and the highlights with grayscale values.

I love to use oil painting it is very exciting to see the development of your artwork changing during the process until the last amazing results. This technique needs time in between the painting process. You need to wait for each layer to dry.
